The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative’s (IAVI) mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive AIDS vaccines for use throughout the world. IAVI has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) since December 2000 to evaluate AIDS vaccine candidates appropriate for use in India.Read more

IAVI and Indian Government Announce Results of Phase I AIDS Vaccine Trial
A phase I clinical trial of an MVA-based AIDS vaccine candidate was successfully completed in India, the results of which showed the vaccine candidate had acceptable levels of safety and was well tolerated.

“The revised figures of HIV prevalence do not alter the line of work in both prevention and care. I would say in this context, the search for a preventive AIDS vaccine assumes greater importance. There definitely should be an increase in the momentum for the search of this prevention vaccine because other than the condom, there is nothing else available.”
